ABSTRACT The tribological responses of gold films sputtered on bearing steel and the effects of surface cleanliness on the film′s adhesive strength were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).To eliminate air contamination a sputtering apparatus was built in the spectrometer and the gold film was directly deposited on characterized steel surfaces. The adhesion strength was evaluated by an epoxy resin adhesion strength measuring and also by a sliding friction test method conducted in nitrogen using a pin-on-disc type tester. Results showed the adhesive strength measuring method can effectively determine the existence of several tenth-layer to a monolayer of anti-rust agent.Sliding friction test indicated the film′s wear life was sensitive to the presence of oxygen and carbon following anti-rust agent removal by ion-bombardment.In addition,a monolayer of anti-rust agent, remaining on the surface after solvent cleaning, was found to lower the friction coefficient in the first 10 repeated traverses under e test conditions employed.
