ABSTRACT ESDU 90036 gives a calculation procedure for across-wind response in uniform or shear flow to vortex shedding of isolated structures such as buildings, towers or stacks, and structural elements. The semi-empirical method was derived from correlations of measurements extracted from the literature for regular non-circular cross-section parallel-sided structures with sharp corners symmetrically aligned with the flow. Such shapes include square, rectangular, triangular and polygonal cross-sections and typical structural member shapes such as I- or H-section beams. The sharp corners fix the separation points and so make the flow Reynolds number independent and allow simplification of the method of ESDU 96030 for response of circular section structures. However, guidance is included on the application of the method to structures with rounded corners or taper, and to polygonal structures with more than eight sides which behave like cylindrical structures. The method is summarised in a calculation sheet and is illustrated with fully-worked examples. It provides estimates of the rms and maximum amplitudes at the critical wind speed for vortex shedding (the wind speed for maximum response) and also for off-critical wind speeds. The basis of the derivation of the method is discussed fully, and the sources of the data are included. A sketch compares predicted rms amplitude with test results showing agreement for vertical structures in shear flow within about 30 per cent in the majority of cases.
